Here are just a few tips on how can you stay safe during the Cyber Monday sales:
Don’t share all your data: When buying products online, it can be easy to fool for companies’ tricks of passing down data you should have to. Be vigilant, and only share details needed to complete the purchase.
Transparency obligations: One way you can tell if a company is safe is by looking at their privacy notice and about page. These are the two ways you can see a company is legitimate, and want the best from your purchase. Companies are ordered to provide you their privacy notice, which will include all the points for data collection and who they will share this information with. Remember your rights!
Stick to websites that are trusted: Always shop around for the retailers with the best reputations. Symbols such as the padlock on your web browser’s address bar and URL addresses that begin with ‘https’ indicate that the site is secure, and that your data is encrypted.
Beware of scammers: As said before, you will see a multitude of websites promoting a Cyber Monday sale. Be wary of giving out personal details to these sites, and bear in mind which details from your card you shouldn’t have to give. If it’s a random 1,000,000 winner customer email, chances are…it’s a scam! If you’re completely unsure, ask your bank or service provider for more details of the website or email. If it seems out of character, it’s likely a scam.
Always keep records: Always keep records of who you are dealing with. If anything does happen, at least you’ll have records of your interactions, and something might be able to be done about it. If you see unusual activity this may indicate that you have been hacked – call your bank up immediately.
