Today is Shrove Tuesday, signifying the last day before the start of Lent. Yes today is the day we will we be indulging in that wonderful sweet Yorkshire batter drizzled in lemon and sugar, but that’s not the only reason we celebrate pancake day. It’s a day for Christians to give up something up until Easter Sunday. This ‘something’ can be anything from an addiction, to sugar or even just anything to improve their physical or mental state.

However, let’s start with the basics where are pancakes originally from. Pancakes were created from the need to use up left-over food to prepare from lent. This includes eggs, butter and flour which was once banned for Lent. The tradition has been continued over the past hundreds of years to which we all know and love today.

The creation of pancakes even go far back to Ancient Greece. The unique and wonderful thing about Shrove Tuesday is that it is celebrated in all parts of the world and is not limited to England or America. However, each country has different takes on the pancake. For example, In Greece, the day is called Apocreas which means ‘from the meat’. Therefore, in Greece the Meat there is forbidden during Lent, the full 21 days. The Greek pancakes are also different to what we eat in England, they are thicker than the usual British pancakes and are often accompanied with honey cinnamon, and sometimes with cheese, nuts, fruits or vegetables!

Regardless of the fun day, SAMS always likes to include the importance of safety on any sort of traditional day and it doesn’t stop at construction. We like to include food safety for all our hospitality companies.
At SAMS we provide a food hygiene course, so if you’re unsure about how to deliver food with good food hygiene then you can take our food hygiene course which will be linked below. Have a good pancake day everyone!
